Reports: Galaxy S5 | iPhone 6 in two trims in September
Apple’s iPhone 6 (or sixes, as the case may be) and Samsung’s Galaxy S 5 are easily some of the 2014 smartphones that fans are anticipating the most, and we’ve already had the opportunity to hear a lot of ideas for what to expect out of each. While some of the details that have been mentioned thus far are largely without controversy, others have been more difficult to pin-down. As we wait for official word to ultimately arrive, we’ve got a couple more theories to check out today, as KDB Daewoo Securities out of South Korea publishes a report on its own expectations for the phones.
According to this, the iPhone 6 would come in two sizes: something in the 4.7 to 4.8-inch range, and a 5.5-inch phablet. We’ve seen those precise measurements jump around a little, but there seems to be a consensus that this is generally what we’re looking at. Resolution has been a slightly more contentions issue, and this account suggests that the smaller iPhone will see a 1080p display, while the larger would get an odd 2272 x 1280 panel.
Other noteworthy points are the increase to 2GB of RAM, a new 128GB storage option, and sticking with an eight-megapixel camera. Interestingly, this claims that the phones will both launch running iOS 7.2, and not the iOS 8 we’ve been recently discussing.
In Samsung land, this Galaxy S 5 description sounds largely in line with existing rumors. That means things like a metal body, 3GB of RAM, and next-gen SoCs, with different variants using either a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 805 or 2GHz Exynos 6 Octa. Display size could grow to around 5.2 inches, and this analysis supports a resolution increase up to 2560 x 1440. Like those iPhone 6 rumors, the GS5 may get it own 128GB storage option.
Mass production of liquid crystal display panels will start as early as the April-June quarter at Sharp's Kameyama factory, Japan Display's Mobara plant, and elsewhere, according to sources. LG Electronics will supply panels as well. The new handset's display resolution is expected to be significantly higher than that of current models.
Apple put the iPhone 5 on the market in September 2012, selling 5 million units within the first three days. But shipments have since been lackluster. Last year, it introduced models in the same series with different price points for the first time with the 5S and 5C.

LG has announced it is to start mass-production of what it calls the "world's first flexible OLED [organic light-emitting diode] panel for smartphones".

Samsung said it intended to launch its first product - a special edition of the Galaxy Note 3 - later this month
Both companies already use the technology to offer curved OLED television sets
Although the displays used in the TVs are in theory "flexible", they are mounted in fixed shells so they cannot be bent or otherwise re-shaped by the owner
A press release from LG's display division indicated its handset screen would curve from top-to-bottom rather than side-to-side, the design Samsung described in a recent patent
It said the advantage of using the tech was that the panel was "bendable and unbreakable"
"For example a device that you snap round your wrist or a traditional shaped smartphone whose screen wraps around the sides onto a bit of the back so that the edges become touchscreen rather than hard buttons."

So, Google bought a smart watch company, and in the process effectively tossed their hats into the smart watch war already being waged
It’s kind of funny to imagine an actual war being waged between so many companies though, as there has not been an actual smart watch released by the majors just yet. Sure, you have the Nike Fuelband, and the Pebble smartwatch, but with releases from tech giants like Apple and Samsung still looming in the shadows, this looks to be quite an interesting development. Interesting in the sense that Android’s leading manufacturer already has a smart watch set to be announced at IFA, and also interesting that Google will seemingly undercut that same device
It’s no secret that Google has been looking to break way into the smart watch game for a while now, but will we simply see an accessory to Android devices, or is this the beginning seeds of an actual Nexus watch being developed?
IFA kicks off on September 6th and runs through the 11th, but expect a couple big announcements as early as the 4th. Check back with Nerd News for the latest
